Owls Use Strong Second Half To Beat Westmoreland

Prince George's men's basketball returned to Novak Field House on Sunday, December 5th to host Westmoreland County Community College for a Region 20 Division III game. The Owls trailed the winless Wolfpack 40-37 at halftime before flipping the script at the break, outscoring Westmoreland 55-28 in the second half to steal a 92-68 win. The Owls moved to 5-3 on the year with the win, including 2-0 in region division games.

Despite the Owls shooting an efficient 51% from the floor in the first half, turnovers were keeping the Wolfpack in control through as they forced Prince George's to turn the ball over 13 times in the first 20 minutes. The Owls also struggled to get to the line in the first half, which had been a strength so far this season. Prince George's recorded only two attempts from the line in the first half, missing on both.

The second half saw the Owls come out hot, creating three steals in the first few minutes, the last of which resulted in an emphatic slam dunk by Keynante Williams to bring the Owls within 1 (44-43), forcing Westmoreland to take a timeout. The Wolfpack was able to hold onto the lead for only a few more minutes before an inside fake move by Deonta Dunlap put the Owls in front, 49-48 with 14:34 left. The Owls never surrendered the lead for the remainder of the game as they further distanced themselves from the Wolfpack, finishing with a 92-68 victory.

Five different Owls finished with double-digit points with Dunlap leading the way, recording 16 points in the win. Sunday's performance marked Dunlap's sixth contest of the year with at least 10 points.

Prince George's went to the line 32 times in the second half as Westmoreland was forced to foul early with the Owls offense quickly gaining control. The Owls finished a season-worst 55.9% (19-34) from the free throw line in the win despite entering Sunday's contest shooting 73.2% from the charity stripe, tied for 9th in the nation in Division III.

The Owls will have a break in action before they travel to The Community College of Philadelphia to take on the Division II Lions on Saturday, December 11th. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
