Men’s Basketball Bounces Back With Dominant Win Over Butler County

Prince George's men's basketball entered Novak Field House Saturday evening, December 7^th riding a three game losing streak when Butler County Community College came to visit the Largo, Maryland campus. Needing a win to turn things around, the Owls responded in dominating fashion with a 125-61 beatdown over the visiting Pioneers in which the Owls led for the entirety of the game. With the win, the Owls improved to 6-4 while Butler County fell to 2-9 on the season.

The Owls quickly found they had a noticeable height advantage over the Pioneers, especially down low with multiple big men either creating points in the paint or collecting rebounds on both the defensive and offensive side of the ball. Utilizing their size, the Owls soon built a 23-9 lead just five minutes into the contest, forcing the Pioneers to take a timeout to regroup. 

Butler County came out of the timeout trading baskets with the Owls to bring the score to 36-22 before Prince George's Jasper Sterling began to catch fire, hitting two consecutive three pointers to go along with a layup to spark the beginning of the end for the Pioneers. Sterling, who finished with a team high 17 points which matched starter Tunde Scrivner, energized his teammates and the crowd which allowed the Owls to control the remainder of the game. Prince George's entered halftime with a comfortable 69-28 lead with Sophomore Scrivner again leading the scoring for the Owls with 12 points. Butler County was shooting an efficient 48 percent from the floor at the break but Prince George's was able to create 28 more shooting opportunities than the Pioneers in the first half alone, a trend that continued in the second half to ultimately outshoot Butler County 94-60 by the final horn.

With the Owls in control by the start of the second half, head coach William "Butch" West primarily turned to his bench to handle the remaining 20 minutes of play. The reserves didn't disappoint as they outscored Butler County 56-33 in the half with twelve of the thirteen Owls players recording a bucket in the victory. Five Owls finished the game in double-digit scoring with freshman Brandon Joseph just missing out on a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds to help secure a 126-61 win for Prince George's.

The Owls earn a much needed win over Butler County before they return home to face Pennsylvania Highlands Community College tomorrow, December 8^th.
