Great Season Ends For Prince George's Men's Basketball In NJCAA Division IIIv District VII Championship Game

PINEHURST, N.C. – A tremendous season ride that gave the Prince George's Community College faithful heart, hard work, dedication, fun and a run all the way to the NJCAA Division III District VII Championship Game concluded on Saturday. The Owls men's basketball team fell 88-84 to Sandhills Community College to have its season end at 22-6.

The game also marked the final game in a Prince George's uniform for two-years sophomores Moetaz Ashkar (Landover Hills, Md./Parkdale), Dariel Medina (Silver Spring, Md./James H. Blake), Alex Morales (Paterson, N.J./Manchester Regional), Darren Rivers (District Heights, Md./DuVal) and Dexter Turner (Washington, D.C./Idea Public Charter).

Morales posted eight points, 11 rebounds and five assists against the Flyers. The sophomore finished his two years in Largo with 914 points, 592 rebounds, 239 assists, 137 steals and 41 blocks. He posted 17 games of 20 points or more while he has posted double figures in points in  45 of 54 tilts in his career. He had 21 games with 10+ rebounds this season and 35 in his career. Morales also had 20 double-doubles this season including 15 of his last 16 games and 28 for his career. The sophomore registered three triple-doubles including two this season. Morales was the 2017 Maryland JUCO Tournament Most Valuable Player and the 2018 NJCAA Division III Region XX Most Valuable Player.

Turner registered 23 points and three assists in his final game to pace the team in the title bout. The sophomore went 7-for-9 from both the field and from behind the arc to tally his second-most scoring output of the season. He tallied 381 points, 169 rebounds, 284 assists, 84 steals and four blocks in his career. Turner posted 13 double-figure performances this season including two-20-point games and 14 double-digit point games in his career. He also dished out at least 10 assists seven times this season and more than five dimes on 20 occasions this season.

Morales finished the season averaging 20.2 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. He ranks fourth in NJCAA Division III for rebounds per game and rebounds (334) while Turner is eighth in assists (196).

Medina had 174 points, 44 rebounds, 24 assists and 16 assists in his career. He recorded six double-digit point games this season including a 20-point game against Pennsylvania Highland Community College on February 23 in the NJCAA Region XX Division III semifinals while he has eight 10+ games in his career. Askhar posted 206 points, 153 rebounds, 15 assists, 18 blocks and nine steals in his two-year in Largo. Ashkar reached double figures in points five times this season and six times in his career and had two 10+ rebound games this season and one career double-double.

This quartet played for the Owls in 2016-17 and 2018-19. They helped the team to the Maryland JUCO Tournament title and a spot in the NJCAA Region XX Division III Tournament Championship Game. This season, they helped Prince George's to the NJCAA Region XX Division III Tournament title and to the NJCAA Division III District VII Championship Game. The 22 wins this season are the most since 2011-12 and the 10 conference wins were the most since the 2012-13 campaign.

Rivers is the other two-year player on this year's team. He played the last two seasons in an Owls uniform and finished his career with 211 points, 192 rebounds, 32 blocks, 16 assists and 11 steals. He recorded double figures in points five times and had a 10+ rebound game this season.

Tunde Scrivner (Washington, D.C./H.D. Woodson) added 14 points in the game on Saturday against Sandhills and posted double figures in points in 27 of the 28 games on the year including eight 20-point games and two 30+ performances. He ranked second on the team with 17.5 points per game.

Kevin Chase (Hyattsville, Md./Henry Wise) added a career-high 11 points in the game for his second career double-figure performance of his career.

Jalen Robinson (Bowie, Md./Bowie) who had eight 10-point games in 2018-19, posted nine points in his final game with the team after playing one season with Prince George's. Deon Savage (Washington, D.C./Theodore Roosevelt) and David Burriss (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) played one season with the team to wrap up their junior college careers.
