Johnson Reaches 1,000 Career Points In Prince George's Men's Basketball NJCAA DIII Region XX Tournament Semifinals Win

YOUNGBLOOD, Pa. – Sophomore Mykal Johnson (Seat Pleasant, Md./Charles H. Flowers) scored 20 points including his 1,000th career point to propel Prince George's Community College past host Westmoreland County Community College 85-77 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XX Semifinals on Saturday.

With the win, the Owls (16-12) will face top seed Montgomery in the NJCAA Division III Region XX Championship Game for the second-straight season. The squad will be looking for its eighth region title and first since the 2015-16 campaign. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday from the Westmoreland County Community College Gymanasium.

Johnson came into the contest needing seven points to join the grand club and the sophomore ended with his 12th game with at least 20 points this season. The sophomore shot 9-for-13 from the floor, 0 of 2 from behind the arc and 2 of 3 from the foul line to account for his 20-point outburst. He has posted double figures in points in 53 of the 58 games he has played in a Prince George's uniform. The sophomore also added five rebounds and five assists to send the Owls to the title bout for the fourth-straight season and the fifth time in the last six seasons.

Gus Stone (Baltimore, Md./North County) paced the Largo program with 22 points. The sophomore has reached double figures for the 38th time in his career. This season Stone has posted a 20-point game in 10 of the 12 games he has played away from Novak Field House.

Shiloh Beale (Waldorf, Md./St. Charles) added 15 points to notched double figures in points for the seventh-straight game. The freshman is averaging 15.7 points per game in this stretch after averaging 6.3 points per game in his first 17 collegiate tilts. 

James Hagins (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) tallied seven points and eight rebounds and Kennith Ford (Forestville, Md./National Collegiate) chipped in eight points in the winning effort.

Prince George's held a four-point margin in each half to earn the victory thanks to a 38-34 margin in the first half and a 47-43 edge in the final frame.

The Owls will be searching for their eighth region title after taking home the crown in 1990-91, 1992-93, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16. It marks the second-straight season the Largo team defeated the Wolfpack in the semnifinals.
