opening tip… Sunday is one week from the big day whether you are talking about the Super Bowl or how Jack Pearson died on This Is Us so Prince George's is ready to fill that void for one Sunday with a Maryland JUCO matchup at the College of Southern Maryland. The tilt has been moved up to a 12 p.m. start time. The Owls defeated the Hawks last season in Largo.

last time out… The last time Prince George's Community College and Baltimore City Community College played a game the Owls scored the game-winning basket in the closing seconds to hoist the MD JUCO Men's Basketball Tournament trophy. It was a tough-fought battle again on Friday night with the go-ahead basket being scored in the final 89 seconds, but there was no trophy on the line. The Panthers took the game against the Owls 85-80. Mykal Johnson paced the Largo program with 24 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double in his last six tilts and sixth of the season. The sophomore shot 8-for-18 from the floor, 3 of 8 from behind the arc and 5 of 8 from the free throw line. The local product has posted double figures in 47 of his 52 games in Largo including 23 contests with at least 20 points and seven 20-point games in 2017-18. His 24-point performance on Friday pushes the sophomore career total to 909 with four regular season games and postseason left. Kennith Ford added 19 points and 11 rebounds for his third career double-double. The sophomore, who has 17 games with at least 10 points this season, is averaging 19.3 points per game in his last four contests. Shiloh Beale added a career high in both points (18) and rebounds (9) to narrowly miss his first collegiate double-double. Beale notched his fourth double-figure point game of his career, but first in front of the home crowd.

next time on the hardwood… Prince George's plays its final road game of the regular season at Hagerstown on Wednesday. The Owls then return to Novak Field House for its final two contests against CCBC Dundalk (Feb. 2) and Harford (Feb. 7). 

making the maryland juco tournament… Prince George's is hosting the Maryland JUCO Tournament on Feb. 15-18 and the Owls hope to defend their tournament title. After play on Friday night, the Largo team sits a half game behind Howard for eighth place in the league, but the Dragons also hold the tiebreaker with the Owls. Hagerstown, who Prince George's plays on Wednesday, is seventh in the standings with a 5-5 record. Chesapeake is also 4-6, but the Owls own the tiebreaker with both teams. The Top-8 teams in the standings play in the upcoming tournament.

now that's a career day… Sophomore Shiloh Beale notched a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds to narrowly miss his first collegiate double-double against Baltimore City on Jan. 26. Sophomore Brian Ferguson scored a career-high 11 points against Frederick on Jan. 24. Sophomore Kennith Ford has posted a career-high 26 points twice this season after reaching the mark against Cecil on Nov. 29 and again against Northern Virginia on Jan. 22. Ford has also grabbed a personal-best 10 boards twice this season after posting 10 caroms against Butler County on Nov. 17 and against the Nighthawks on Jan. 22. Sophomore James Hagins matched his career high of 23 points against Howard on Jan. 17 after posting a collegiate-best 23 points against CCBC Catonsville on Dec. 6.  The sophomore also posted a career-high 16 caroms against the Dragons. Sophomore Mykal Johnson dished out a career-high 10 assists on his way to his first collegiate triple-double while sophomore Gus Stone hauled in 10 rebounds on his way to his first career double-double in the contest against Garrett on Jan. 13. Johnson grabbed a career-best 15 boards against Dragons. Stone also registered a career-best 33 points against CCBC Catonsville on Dec. 6. Sophomore Paul Golder notched a Prince George's high of 22 points against Anne Arundel on Jan. 5. Golder registered a career-best 23 points twice last season at another junior college. Freshman Darren Rivers registered a career-best eight points and 13 rebounds against Potomac State on Dec. 2. Sophomore Tavon Ngangum (12 points) had a Prince George's highs against Allegany College of Maryland on Nov. 15.

the point is double figures… Sophomore Mykal Johnson has posted double figures in 47 of his 52 career games including 21 games this season. Sophomore Gus Stone has posted 34 10+ games in his career including 19 of 22 tilts this season. Sophomore Kennith Ford has 33 career double-figure point games including 17 this season while sophomore James Hagins has 12 double-figure games in his career including 10 this season. Freshman Shiloh Beale has four double-figure point performances this season. Sophomore Tavon Ngangum has two 10+ games in an Owl uniform and fellow sophomores Brian Ferguson and Paul Golder each have one.

20-20 vision… Sophomore Mykal Johnson has scored 20 points in a game 21 times and 30 points three in his career, including seven times this season. Sophomore Gus Stone has 20 20-point performances and reached 30 points in a game twice this season. Stone has scored at least 20 points in 14 games this season. Sophomore Kennith Ford has four career 20-point games on his resume including three this season while sophomore James Hagins posted 20 points twice this season with a pair of 23-point outburst. Sophomore Paul Golder reached 20 points for the first time in his Owls career against Anne Arundel on Jan. 5.

on the boards… Sophomore James Hagins has grabbed double figures in rebounds 12 times in his career including 10 times this season. Sophomore Mykal Johnson has hauled in 10+ rebounds six times this season and freshman Darren Rivers has posted 10 caroms in a game twice this season while sophomore Kennith Ford has three double-figure rebound contest this season.

the dish… Sophomore Mykal Johnson became the first Owl player to register 10 assists in a game since Alex Morales handed out 13 assists against Allegany (Md.) on Jan. 13, 2017 when Johnson recorded 10 dimes against Garrett on Jan. 13, 2018. Johnson has handed out five or more assists four times this season and five times in his career. Sophomore Gus Stone has five 5+ assist games, including tilts with seven, eight and nine assists this season. Freshman Shiloh Beale has two six assists games this season and sophomore Tavon Ngangum has two games with at least five helpers on the year. Sophomore Kennith Ford has one five assist tilt in 2017-18.

double trouble… Sophomore James Hagins has posted seven double-doubles including turning the trick five times this season. Sophomore Mykal Johnson has six double-doubles this season including five since the New Year hit. Sophomore Kennith Ford has turned the trick three times and fellow sophomore Gus Stone has one double-double this season.

triple trouble… Sophomore Mykal Johnson recorded a triple-double against Garrett after registering 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists on Jan. 13. The 10 assists were a career best while the sophomore had two previous double-doubles before his triple threat against the Lakers.

nice to see you again… Sophomore Gus Stone has returned to the Owls for the 2017-18 season after playing in 2016-17. Stone ranked second on the team in his freshman campaign with 14.8 points per game and posted 20 double-figure performances including 11 games with 20 points or more.

welcome to the perch… Along with welcoming back Gus Stone, head coach Brian Johnson has added sophomores Paul Golder, Tavon Ngangum and Brian Ferguson, and freshmen Shiloh Beale, Darren Rivers, Bryon Scriber and AJ Perdomo to the team in 2017-18.

that's gold, jerry, gold… Prince George's is celebrating its 50th Anniversary of Prince George's Athletics in 2017-18. Prince George's unveiled gold uniforms for men's soccer against Cecil on Sept. 15 as part of the 50th Anniversary of Prince George's Athletics, A Celebration of the Past, Present, And Future. The men's and women's basketball teams unveiled their gold jerseys for the doubleheader against CCBC Catonsville on Dec. 6 and will be wearing them for select games the rest of the season.

hosting maryland juco tournament… Prince George's will be hosting the Maryland JUCO Tournament for both men's and women's basketball on Feb. 23-25. The top eight teams on both the men's and women's side in the league will fight for Maryland Junior College pride.

men's basketball tradition… The men's basketball team has won the Maryland JUCO Tournament four times (1971-72, 1979-80, 1980-81, 2016-17) and the NJCAA Region XX crown seven times (1990-91, 1992-93, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16).

about the coach… Head coach Brian Johnson begins his second season as the men's basketball head coach. He led the Owls to a 21-9 record last season, to the Maryland JUCO Tournament title and to the NJCAA Region XX Division III title game. The 21 wins marked the first 20-win season since 2013-14. Johnson was inducted into his high school (Mount St. Joseph) hall of fame in the fall of 2017. The Owls are 33-18 under Johnson in his two seasons at the helm.
