A Rivers Run Through Career Highs To Power Prince George's Men's Basketball Past Potomac State, 73-64

LARGO, Md. – Prince George's Community College received the usual input from Mykal Johnson (Seat Pleasant, Md./Charles H. Flowers), Gus Stone (Baltimore, Md./North County) and Kennith Ford (Forestville, Md./National Collegiate Prep), but it was the spark of Darren Rivers (District Heights, Md./Duval) off the bench that might have been the difference to lead the Owls to a 73-64 victory against Potomac State College in men's basketball action on Saturday. 

Rivers played a season-high 27 minutes and notched career-highs in points (8), rebounds (13), blocks (4) and steals (2). The freshman was instrumental in the first half rally to give Prince George's the lead going into the locker room and the squad continued its success in the second half to earn the win.

Johnson notched his second-straight 20-point performance with 21 points in the contest while Stone tallied 18 points and seven rebounds and Ford chipped 10 points off the bench in the winning effort.

Trailing 6-0, the Owls used a 16-5 run to take a 16-11 lead with 9:38 left in the first half. Stone powered the surge with five points while the squad received points from five different players. Rivers extended the advantage to 23-15 to help Prince George's go into the locker room with a 25-21 lead.

Johnson scored four points while Rivers, Stone and Ford each recorded a basket to spark a 13-2 run that was capped by a Shiloh Beale (Waldorf, Md./St. Charles) trey with 13:44 to extend the Largo program's lead from two points to 38-25.

The Catamounts were able to trim the margin to 54-48 with 5:30 on the clock, but a Johnson triple with 4:02 on the clock restored a nine-point lead and Potomac State could get no closer the rest of the way.

Beale added eight points in the winning effort.

Prince George's returns to action on Sunday against Davidson County. Tipoff is 1 p.m.
