Prince George's Men's And Women's Basketball Open 2017-18 Campaign On Wednesday Night At Home

LARGO, Md. – The Prince George's men's and women's basketball teams open the 2017-18 season on Wednesday at Novak Field House. The Owl women will face Cumberland County at 5:30 p.m. and the Prince George's men will follow at 7:30 p.m. against the University of Maryland Club team.

The Owls women's basketball team advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XX Division III championship game last season and finished the year 12-13 overall and 7-5 in Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) play. After the game against Cumberland County, the women will travel to the Patrick Henry Tournament and for the second-consecutive season battle host Patrick Henry (Saturday) and Guilford Technical (Sunday) in the two-day tournament.

The Owl men's basketball team won the Maryland JUCO Tournament and advanced to the NJCAA Region XX Division III Championship Game in 2016-17. The squad finished 21-9 overall and 9-5 in league play while the 21 wins were the most since the 2013-14 season. After the contest against the Maryland Club team, Prince George's will travel to Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (Thursday) and will join the women's team at the Patrick Henry Tournament with games against Patrick Henry (Saturday) and Pitt (Sunday).

Both teams will then return home to host Pennsylvania Highlands in an NJCAA Region XX Division III tilt on November 8.

This athletic season (2017-18) marks the 50th Anniversary of Prince George's athletics. The department is holding a year-long celebration with the first basketball event coming up on December 6 against CCBC Catonsville. The doubleheader will be Alumni Appreciation Night and all Prince George's alumni, faculty and staff will be admitted to the night's contests for free, receive a free gift and discounted meal options at the concession stand. Prince George's will also be hosting Kid's Night on January 17 against Howard Community College. Pre-register information will be available in the coming months.

Prince George's is also looking to start an Athletics Hall of Fame to cap the year-long celebration on Monday, April 23. Nominations are now being accepted until December 15 by going to www.pgccowls.com/halloffame.

Prince George's will also be hosting the Maryland JUCO Tournament on February 15-18 and then will travel to the NJCAA Region XX Division III Tournament at Westmoreland on February 23-25.

The women's basketball team has won the Maryland JUCO Tournament seven times (1973-74, 1974-75, 1977-78, 1978-79, 1985-86, 1988-89 and 2000-01) and the NJCAA Region XX title four times (1974-75, 1988-89, 2005-06 and 2015-16).

The men's basketball team has won the Maryland JUCO Tournament four times (1971-72, 1979-80, 1980-81, 2016-17) and the NJCAA Region XX crown seven times (1990-91, 1992-93, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16).

Women's basketball head coach Tiona Harris, a former Prince George's women's basketball standout, begins her seventh season at the helm while men's basketball head coach Brian Johnson embarks on his second season as the Owls head coach.
