Prince George's Men's Basketball Looks To Earn Fourth-Straight NJCAA Division III Region XX Championship On Sunday

LARGO, Md. – The Prince George's men's basketball team continues its quest for its fourth consecutive and seventh overall National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XX Basketball title in the championship game against top seed and host Montgomery at the MC-Rockville Gymnasium on the campus of Montgomery College on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Prince George's (21-8) is led by freshman Mykal Johnson (Landover, Md.), who leads the team with 17.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Fellow freshman Alex Morales (Patterson, N.J.) ranks second on the squad with 13.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game while sophomore Kenneth Pettaway (Bowie, Md.) is averaging 9.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and freshman Kennith Ford (Forrestville, Md.) is also averaging 9.7 points and with 2.8 rebounds per game.

Patrick Smith paces four Montgomery (19-9) in double figures with 17.5 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. Collin Turner is second on the team with 17.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while Chris Johnson is averaging 13.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game and Andre Hodo ranks fourth with 12.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Prince George's advanced to the title bout with an 82-65 victory against third seed Westmoreland County in the semifinals on Saturday. Ford powered the Owls with 17 points while Morales (16 points), Pettaway (12 points) and James Hagins (Roanoke, Va.) (12 points, 11 rebounds) also found double figures in the winning effort.

The Raptors joined the Owls in the championship game after defeating CC of Allegheny County-Allegheny 92-77 in the other semifinal matchup on Saturday. Shekinah Mondoua led six Montgomery players in double figures with 19 points while Isaac Akwara (18 points), Smith (16 points, 16 rebounds), Chris Johnson (14 points) and Ramel Davidson (12 points, 11 rebounds) also found double digits on the night.

Montgomery defeated Prince George's 79-60 at the Novak Field House on Jan. 11. Mykal Johnson paced the Owls with 22 points and Morales tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Hodo fueled the Raptors with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Johnson added 15 points, Smith registered 13 points and 13 rebounds and Davidson chipped in 10 points.

It will be the second-straight campaign the two teams will square off in the championship game after Prince George's downed Montgomery 79-69 in last year's NJCAA Division III Region XX title game on Feb. 21, 2016.

The Owls are looking for their seventh Region XX title after winning the championship in 1990-91, 1992-93, 2007-08, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16.

Head coach Brian Johnson is in his first season in Largo and has guided Prince George's to its first 20-win campaign since the 2013-14 campaign.
