Prince George's Men's Basketball Set To Face Westmoreland County In NJCAA Region XX Semifinals On Saturday
LARGO, Md. – Second-seed Prince George's Community College will face third-seed Westmoreland County Community College in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XX Semifinals on Saturday after the Westmoreland County defeated Butler County Community College 77-54 in the quarterfinals on Friday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the MC-Rockville Gymnasium on the Rockville campus of Montgomery College.
In a battle of two teams from the Keystone State, Westmoreland County took the lead in the final two minutes of the first half and pulled away in the final frame against Butler County to set up the semifinals matchup with the Owls. Daniel King paced Westmoreland County with 30 points while Jordan Johnson (17 points) and Jalen Stevens (13 points) also found double figures in the win. It will be the first contest between Prince George's and Westmoreland this season after the two teams were scheduled to face off on the hardwood on Dec. 17, but the contest was cancelled due to impending weather scheduled to hit the Youngwood, Pa., area.
Prince George's will be back on the hardwood for the first time since claiming its fourth Maryland Junior College Tournament Championship on Sunday with a thrilling 63-62 decision against Baltimore City. Sophomore Alex Morales drained a jumper with six seconds left to propel the Largo program to the crown. The freshman finished with 20 points and 17 rebounds while Mykal Johnson registered 20 points off the bench in the winning effort.
The Owls will be looking for their fourth-straight and seventh overall NJCAA Region XX title after winning the championship in 1990-91, 1992-93, 2007-08, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16.
In the other semifinal contest on Saturday, top-seed and host Montgomery College will battle CC of Allegheny College-Allegheny at 5 p.m. after CC of Allegheny County-Allegheny defeated Pennsylvania Highlands Community College 78-75 in the first quarterfinal matchup.
