Prince George's Baseball Splits Twinbill With College Of Southern Maryland

LARGO, Md. – Josh Pietrandrea (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) recorded two RBIs in an opening-game victory while Vinny Rotundo (New York, N.Y./Middletown) smacked his first collegiate homer and drove in three runs in the nightcap of a Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MD JUCO) baseball doubleheader against the College of Southern Maryland  on Sunday.

Pietrandrea coaxed a bases loaded walk in the first to give the Owls (16-23, 10-15 MD JUCO) the early advantage in the opener and then drilled a solo home run in the fifth after the Hawks made it a one-run game en route to a 5-2 victory in the first game. The freshman scored two runs and added a sacrifice fly in the second game to finish the afternoon 1-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. 

Rotundo was the big highlight in the second game after the he went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Rotundo hit a two-run homer in the first to tie the game at 3, singled through the left side in the third and then found that same hole in the fourth to tie the game at 6 in a 10-6 loss.

Austin Adams (Atlanta, Ga./Whitewater) posted three hits, three runs scored and an RBI on the afternoon while Anthony Cavalier (Sarasota, Fla./Branden River) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with four strikeouts in the opener.

Prince George's jumped out to the advantage in the opener and never looked back to earn a 5-2 win.

The Owls scored a pair of runs in the first without a hit. Adams and Jake Brewer (Gibson City, Ill./Gibson City Melvin Selby) before Brandon Crosby (Richmond, Va./Atlee, Mechanicsville) walked to load the bases. Pietrandrea and Naquan Holden (Brooklyn, N.Y./Perkiomen) then both coaxed bases loaded walks to give the Largo team a 2-0 edge.

Adams walked again to open fourth and then stole second and went to third on an error on the play before Brewer plated Adams on a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-0 advantage.

Southern Maryland trimmed the margin to 3-2 after scoring two runs in the fifth. 

Prince George's answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame for a 5-2 lead. Pietrandrea smacked his fifth homer of the year to lead off the fifth and then Tommy Petrosino Jr (Bayonne, N.J./St. Anthony's) plated Dominic Marquez (Long Beach, Calif./Jordan), who doubled down the right field line, on a bunt play.

In the nightcap, Rotundo tied the game at 3 in the first and at 6 in the fourth before the Hawks scored four runs in the sixth to earn a 10-6 decision.

After Southern Maryland scored three runs in the top of the first, the Owls posted three runs in the bottom of the stanza to even the score at 3. Crosby smacked a homer to center and then after Pietrandrea walked Rotundo hit a high fly ball that kept traveling until it went over the center fence to tie the game.

The Hawks then scored a run in the second, third and fourth to take a 6-4 edge.

Prince George's registered a run in the third and two in the fourth to tie the game at 6. 

Pietrandrea walked to start the third and moved to second on Rotundo's second hit of the day before Petrosino singled through the right side to bring in Pietrandrea.

Adams singled to center and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt to start the fourth. After Crosby walked, Pietradrea brought home Adams on a sacrifice fly and Rotundo singled through the left side to tie the game at 6.

Southern Maryland scored four times in the sixth to earn the win in the regular season finale.
