NJCAA Division III Region XX All-Tournament Team Announced
LARGO, Md. – After Prince George's Community College defeated Montgomery College 6-5 for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XX Championship, the All-Region XX Tournament was announced on Tuesday.
Colton Cavalero (Butler), Kenneth Bruno (CCAC-South), Luis Conteras (CCAC-South), Vincent Anninos (Montgomery), Brock Antognoni (Montgomery), Greg Brown (Montgomery), Cole Wykoff (Montgomery), Brandon Crosby (Prince George's), Ryan Faircloth (Prince George's), Kevin Kornieck (Prince George's), Dakota McFadden (Prince George's) and Bay To (Prince George's) were selected to the All-Tournament team for their play over the three-day tournament.
Cavalero went 3-for-7 with two runs scored, a homerun and four RBIs in games against Prince George's and CCAC-South. He posted two hits and an RBI against the Owls and then smacked a three-run homer against the Tigers.
Bruno went 6-for-10 with two runs scored, a double and three RBIs in two games against Montgomery and one against Butler County. Bruno notched a run-scoring double in the first matchup with the Raptors before tallying two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs against Butler County. He capped his three games with a 3-for-4 performance against Montgomery.
Conteras went 5-for-10 with two runs scored, two doubles, a homer and five RBIs in three games. After posting a hit and an RBI against the Raptors in the opening game, he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, a homer and four RBIs against Butler, and then registered a double in the second tilt against the Raptors.
Anninos got the win in Montgomery's opening game against CCAC-South, allowing three runs (two earned) in five innings with three strikeouts.
Antognoni went 4-for-12 (4-for-8 in first two days) with five runs scored, a double, a homer and four RBIs in four games. He posted a hit, two runs scored and an RBI against CCAC-South in the opening game and then went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, a homer and two RBIs against Prince George's. His eighth inning homer gave the Raptors the lead against the Owls before the Largo program's two-run rally in the ninth. Antognoni posted a run and an RBI in the second matchup with the Tigers.
Brown posted three hits, five runs scored, a double, a homer and four RBIs in the four games. After posting an RBI in the opening game, Brown recorded a double, two runs scored and an RBI against Prince George's on Monday before adding a hit, two runs scored and an RBI in the second tilt against CCAC-South. Brown then smacked a solo homer to tie the game at 3 in the championship game. In addition, he tossed 6.2 innings with three strikeouts on the mound over the final two days.
Montgomery played 32 innings over three days and Wykoff put on his catcher's gear and got behind the plate for every frame. The catcher also had a good tournament at the plate, going 6-for-13 with three runs scored, two doubles and six RBIs. He posted three runs scored and an RBI against CCAC-South on Sunday and then recorded two hits, a double and knocked in the first three runs against the Owls on Tuesday. Wykoff then registered two hits and an RBI against the Tigers on Monday and two hits, a double and an RBI in the championship game.
Crosby went 5-for-11 in the three games with four runs scored, two doubles, three RBIs and three stolen bases. He notched three hits, a run scored and two RBIs on a big base hit in the ninth inning against Butler and then tallied two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI in the first game against Montgomery. Crosby then scored the go-ahead run in the title bout against the Raptors.
Faircloth was 3-for-7 with two runs scored, a homer and two RBIs. Faircloth propelled the squad to the win against the Pioneers with a walk-off RBI single in the 10th on Sunday and then smacked a home run down the left field line against Montgomery on Monday. He then allowed a run on the mound in the eighth, but got out of the jam in the frame to maintain the 6-5 edge for the Owls in the championship game.
The comeback victories against Butler County and Montgomery might not have been possible without Kornieck. The sophomore tossed two scoreless innings in relief allowing one hit against the Pioneers to earn the win and then came in to throw a scoreless ninth in the comeback win against the Raptors to pick up his second win of the tournament.
McFadden started the tournament slow after going 0-for-8 with one run scored, but finished 3-for-5 with a run scored, two doubles, a homer and three RBIs in his last five at-bats. He handed Prince George's the 8-7 win against Montgomery with a walk-off double in the ninth for his first hit of the tournament on Monday and then went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo homerun, a run scored and two RBIs. McFadden smacked an opposite field homer to help tie the game at 2 in the second and then gave the Owls a 3-2 lead with a double in the sixth. On the hill, he allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits with six walks and eight strikeouts in the first contest against Montgomery.
To had either the game-tying hit or the go-ahead hit in all three games, posting three hits, two runs scored and five RBIs in the three games. His cue-shot base hit into right against Butler County scored two runs to tie the game at 5 in the bottom of the ninth and then a base hit to center in the ninth against Montgomery on Monday to tie the game in the ninth and then came home to score the decisive run on McFadden's hit for one of his two runs scored on the day. In the championship game, he smacked a two-run single to left to break a 6-4 tie in the seventh to bring home the decisive run for the title.
