Catch And Tip Day At Prince George's Baseball Doubleheader On Saturday Against Chesapeake; Owls Travel To Allegany On Sunday

opening pitch… Prince George's concludes its six-game homestand against Chesapeake on Saturday with a doubleheader before traveling to Allegany College of Maryland to start a three-game road trip on Sunday.

catch and tip game… Prince George's athletic department invites fans to Saturday's doubleheader against Chesapeake to Catch A Chick-fila sandwich and Tip Your Cap in honor of William "Bumps" Vaughan. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free chick-fil-a sandwich and an Owls hat that has the No. 44 along with Bumps Vaughan's name on the side of it. The day is set to honor the legacy of Vaughan, a Prince George's baseball coach legend. He coached the Owls for 20 seasons from 1986-2005 and passed away at the age of 90 on Feb. 25, 2017.

the word on the skipjacks… Chesapeake comes into the twinbill 22-16-1 overall and 5-8-1 in league play after ending in an 8-all standstill on Thursday. Eddie Nevins leads the team with a .353 batting average, 42 hits, 37 runs scored, 18 doubles, a triple, five homers and 35 RBIs. Tyler Galazin is batting .345 with 41 hits, 43 runs scored, 12 doubles, two homers and 16 RBIs while Cody Forster is batting .320 with 32 hits, 28 runs scored, three doubles, a triple and 11 RBIs. Michael YaSenka leads the pitching staff with 50.0 innings pitched, a 4-0 record, a 4.14 ERA and 78 strikeouts.

opening pitch… Prince George's and Allegany will battle for the first time since the 2015 season after the doubleheader was postponed last season. The Trojans swept the two-game set in 2015 while the two teams split the season series in 2013 and 2014.

the word on the trojans… Allegany, who travels to CCBC Catonsville for a doubleheader on Saturday, comes into the weekend 15-13 overall and 5-10 in league play after falling to Potomac State of WVU on Tuesday. Dan Fry leads the team with a .436 batting average with 44 hits, 35 runs scored, seven doubles, three triples, 12 homers and 41 RBIs. Sam Plafcan is hitting .370 with 30 hits, 19 runs scored, seven doubles, five homers and 28 RBIs while Jake Foden is batting .327 with 33 hits, 29 runs scored, 12 doubles, a triple, a homer and 22 RBIs. Josh Stegmaler leads the hurlers with 39.2 innings pitched with a 1-3 record and 38 strikeouts.

last time out… Dakota McFadden went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored to help ninth-ranked Prince George's Community College rally past Anne Arundel Community College 10-5 on Thursday. Twice in the game McFadden squared the score with the Riverhawks thanks to a two-run double in the first to tie the game at 2 and then smacked an RBI single to center in the seventh to even the contest at 5. The freshman gave the Owls the lead in the first when he touched home on a passed ball and then registered the go-ahead run on Siri-Jacob Ramirez's RBI double in the seventh. McFadden also tossed six innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Michael Hovermill, Jr. pitched the final three innings in relief and allowed one hit with four strikeouts to pick up his second-straight win in relief and his fourth-consecutive decision. The freshman has posted 12.0 innings against Anne Arundel this season and given up one run on five hits with 15 strikeouts and one walk after pitching a complete-game gem against the Riverhawks in a 7-1 victory on Mar. 28. Bay To added two hits, three runs scored and an RBI while Brandon Crosby recorded two hits, two runs scored and an RBI after smacking his second home run of the season. Austin Adams came off the bench to notch a two-run single in the winning effort.

next on tap… Prince George's continues its three-game road trip at CCBC Catonsville on Thursday. The Owls return home to host Westmoreland County on Apr. 29 and Garrett on Apr. 30.

nationally ranked… Prince George's is ranked ninth for the second time this season. The Owls entered the poll in the ninth spot on Apr. 4 and then dropped out into the receiving votes category last week. The squad responded by going 4-0 against Division II competition and rejoined the poll on Tuesday. Cumberland County took over the top spot in the poll after receiving two first-place votes and 63 points, two points ahead of Rowan Glouchester (61 points), who also received two first-place votes. St. Cloud Tech notched three first-place nods, but sits at No. 3 with 59 points while last week's top team Brookdale dropped to fourth with 52 points. Tyler (41 points), Niagara County (30 points), Northampton (22 points), Century (17 points), Prince George's (13 points) and Onondaga (9 points) round out the Top-10 in the national poll.

milestone numbers… Prince George's has won 20 games for the first time under head coach Buddy Foster. The Owls reached the milestone with a 3-2 win against No. 17 Frederick on Apr. 15. Foster is now just six wins shy of 100 wins for his career.

theft master… Freshman Brandon Crosby became the third player in the last five years to reach 20 steals in a season after swiping two bases against Harford on Apr. 4. Crosby, who currently has 27 bases, joined Roland Eusesio (26, 2016) and Abdiel Marcano (29, 2014 and 20, 2013) as the only players with 20 steals in that stretch. Crosby needs three steals to become the first players in the last five years to reach 30 stolen bases.

this is how we roll… Prince George's players have recorded at least two hits in a game 103 times this season. The squad has also had three hits in a game by a player 27 times, four hits by a player six times and three five-hit performances. Brandon Crosby leads the way with 17 multi-hit games this season while Harold Marte (12),Bay To (12), Dakota McFadden (12), Dwayne Coleman (9), Siri-Jacob Ramirez (7), Austin Adams (6), Kilian Bloat (6), Ryan Faircloth (5), Jared Davis (4), Thomas Thorgersen (4), Quentin Rohrbaugh (3), Naquan Holden (2) and Bryan Waltemath (2) have also notch multi-hit contests this season. Crosby has tallied eight games with three hits while Bloat (3), Marte (3), McFadden (3), Coleman (1), Faircloth (1), Holden (1), Ramirez (1). Adams and McFadden have two four-hit games and Coleman and Waltemath each have one four-hit performance this season while Coleman, To and Ramirez each recorded a five-hit performance this season.

punch out kings…
 Five Prince George's pitchers have recorded nine strikeouts or more in a game this season. Jonathan Mahoney posted 11 strikeouts in a five-inning game against Central Virginia on Feb. 8 while Michael Hovermill, Jr. registered 11 strikeouts in nine innings against Anne Arundel on Mar. 28 for the top strikeout mark this season. Dakota McFadden struck out 10 College of Faith hitters on Feb. 18 in seven innings while Mahoney posted nine punch outs against Orange County on Feb. 26 and Kilian Bloat registered nine strikeouts against UVAA on Feb. 17. Thomas Thorgersen recorded nine of his 12 outs recorded via the strikeout against Harford on Apr. 4. Prince George's suffered its first loss of the season against the Fighting Owls when a pitcher tallied at least nine punch outs in a game and sits 5-1 on the year when a hurler reaches that feat.

hovermill honored… Michael Hovermill, Jr. was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 27-April 2. It is Hovermill's first honor of the season. Hovermill pitched a nine inning complete-game gem in a 7-1 win against Anne Arundel Community College on Mar. 28, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts on 117 pitches. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning five times and retired 12 of 13 batters faced from the second to the fifth inning with the only hitter reaching base on an error in that stretch. The Riverhawks were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and twice Anne Arundel had runners in scoring position with no outs and the freshman got out of both innings unscathed. 

what a stretch… After going through a five-game winless streak, Prince George's has won 12 of its last 16 games, including going 6-0 against NJCAA Division III teams and have won all four games against Division III Region XX competition. The squad has posted 107 runs in the 12 wins and has tallied 24 innings with two or more runs scored, including five four-run frames, five five-run innings, a six-run inning outburst and a nine-run outburst against Montgomery. The Owls have accounted for 89 of their 107 runs in this span in a multiple scoring run inning. The team has pounded out 148 hits in the 12 victories, including 48 extra base hits (34 doubles, 5 triples, 9 home runs).

region xx tournament… Prince George's Community College will host the NJCAA Division III Region XX Tournament on May 12-14 and looks to be in good position to be the top seed in the three-day event. The Owls swept CACC-Allegheny 6-2 and 11-1 on Mar. 26 and then swept Montgomery 14-11 and 3-2 on Apr. 2. Westmoreland County will come to town on Apr. 29.

in the nation… Brandon Crosby leads the National Junior College Athletic Association with 27 stolen bases while Dakota McFadden ranks fourth in doubles (16) and Bay To is 10th in triples (4). As a team, the Owls lead Division III in slugging percentage (.584) and batting average (.386) and on-base percentage (.469) while ranking fourth in triples (18), fifth in home runs (24), sixth in stolen bases (76), eighth in hits (367) and eighth in doubles (80), ninth in runs (286) and ninth in RBIs (243). NOTE: Prince George's is an NJCAA Division III member so these rankings only include Division III programs in the nation.

in the league… Brandon Crosby ranks second in Maryland JUCO in stolen bases (27), fourth in hits (53), second in batting average (.461), second in on-base percentage (.546), eighth in doubles (12), sixth in runs scored (46) and 10th in RBIs (37). Dakota McFadden ranks third the circuit in doubles (16), fifth in batting average (.434) and sixth in ERA (2.76), eighth in slugging percentage (.737) and ninth in innings pitched (42.1). Jonathan Mahoney ranks sixth in strikeouts per nine innings (11.37) and Bay To sits third in triples (4), seventh in doubles (13), ninth in on base percentage (.500) and 10th in stolen bases (15) while Dwayne Coleman is ninth in batting average (.414) and Siri-Jacob Ramirez is ninth in triples (3). Harold Marte sits ninth in slugging percentage (.736) and ninth in batting average (.414). As a team, the Owls lead the conference with a .386 batting average while ranking second in on-base percentage (.469), second in slugging percentage (.584), second in triples (18), third in stolen bases (76), third in hits (367), third in doubles (80), fourth in RBIs (243), fourth in runs (299) and fifth in home runs (24) in the circuit. NOTE: The Maryland JUCO is comprised of all the teams from Maryland no matter what division affiliation (Division I, II or III).

the long ball… Prince George's has smacked 23 home runs this season. Harold Marte leads the team with six homers while Dwayne Coleman and Dakota McFadden have smacked four home runs. Ryan Faircloth and Bay To each have three round trippers while Brandon Crosby has two homers, and Kilian Bloat and Siri-Jacob Ramirez each have one long ball this season.  

the roster… Head coach Buddy Foster has added 11 freshmen to his team in 2017 while returning 10 players from last year's team.

a loss to the owls family... Legendary Prince George's baseball coach William "Bumps" Vaughan passed away at the age of 90 on Feb. 25. In his long career as a head coach includes 20 years at the helm of the Owls from 1986-2005. The Owls will be wearing a special patch on their uniforms in honor of Vaughan and the athletic department will pay tribute to the legendary coach at an upcoming game.

about the coach… 
Head coach Buddy Foster enters his sixth season as the head coach of the baseball team. Foster has been at Prince George's since the 2009 campaign after serving as the squad's pitching coach for three seasons before being elevated to the head coach position. He
