Prince George's Baseball And CCBC Catonsville End Tied At 10 Due To Darkness

LARGO, Md. – Siri-Jacob Ramirez (Largo, Md./Cenapfc [Dominican Republic]) smoked an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game at 10 for Prince George's Community College against CCBC Catonsville in Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MDJUCO) baseball action on Thursday. The game ended with the two teams tied at 10 after nine innings and could not go into extra innings due to darkness.

After the Cardinals (4-5-1, 0-0-1 MDJUCO) took a 10-9 lead in the top of the eighth inning, Dwayne Coleman (Lothian, Md./Southern) reached on a single to left field and moved to second on a wild pitch before Ramirez drove the ball to the right-center gap to bring home Coleman with the tying run with no outs. A fly out moved Ramirez to third, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.

In the CCBC Catonsville ninth, Nick Sprenkle reached on a bunt single and stole second base with two outs, but was left stranded on base. Thomas Thorgersen (Largo, Md./Forest Park [Va.]) walked with one out, but two strikeouts ended the inning and the day for the two teams.

Ramirez finished the afternoon 5-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored for the Owls (10-2-1, 0-1-1 MDJUCO) while Dakota McFadden (Largo, Md./Heide Trask [N.C.]) drilled a two-run homer and completed his afternoon with three RBIs and two runs scored. Thorgersen registered two hits and an RBI, and Brandon Crosby (Mitcheville, Md./Atlee, Mechanicsville [Va.]) was an on-base machine with three walks, a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

Ed Nottingham went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored for the Cardinals, including a three-run homer in the eighth to temporarily give the visitors back the lead. Brady Adam added a two-run shot and two runs scored while Carl Colbert, Jr., scored three times and added a hit on the afternoon.

In a back-and-forth game on the diamond the two teams traded the lead six times before ending the game due to darkness tied at 10.

Prince George's struck first with a run in the first after Crosby walked, moved to second on a bunt and came around to score on Ramirez's single back through the box for a 1-0 edge.

A three-run third gave CCBC Catonsville a 3-1 lead thanks to a Nottingham RBI single and a Manny Jimenez two-run double.

The advantage did not last long after the Owls answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Jared Davis (Largo, Md./Bayside [Va.]) tripled to right field and touched home on Crosby's sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. After Ramirez singled to left, McFadden drilled a homer over the center field fence to give the Largo program a 4-3 margin.

Fueled by an Adam two-run bomb to right, the Cardinals retook the lead in the fourth, 5-4.

CCBC Catonsville would hold the advantage until the fifth inning thanks to another Prince George's three-run rally. Coleman reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on Ramirez's single through the left side. Harold Marte (Largo, Md./Battlefield [Va.]) hit a ball up the middle that the second baseman tried to make an acrobatic play to get Marte at first, but threw the ball past the first baseman to allow McFadden and Ryan Faircloth (Wade, N.C./Cape Fear) each cross the plate for a 7-5 advantage.

In the sixth, Crosby walked, stole second and moved to third on Ramirez's infield single before touching home on McFadden's opposite field sacrifice fly to increase the lead to three runs.

The Cardinals cut the deficit to one run in the seventh thanks to a Bud Weismore RBI single while the second run came home courtesy of an error to make the score 8-7 in favor of Owls.

Prince George's tacked on a run in the seventh thanks to some small ball. Bay To (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann) walked, moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt before To stole third and scored on Thorgersen's run-scoring bunt for a 9-7 lead.

CCBC Catonsville then used a three-run homer by Nottingham in the top of the eighth to give the Cardinals a short-lived 10-9 lead before Ramirez tied the game in the bottom of the stanza with a double and the game ended in a 10-all standstill.

The Owls return to action on Sunday in a doubleheader against Garrett College at the Prince George's Community College Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. Don't forget to spring forward on Sunday and set clocks up one hour before heading out to the field.
