Former Prince George's Baseball Head Coach William "Bumps" Vaughan Passed Away On Saturday

LARGO, Md. – Legendary former Prince George's Community College baseball head coach William "Bumps" Vaughan passed away at the age of 90 on Saturday.

Vaughan was a baseball legend in Prince George's County where he coached Cheverly American Legion (1954-1995), Bowie High School (1965-1985) and Prince George's Community College (1986-2005).

"Bumps impacted more people than anyone I have ever met," said Director of Athletics Jo Ann Rogers Todaro. "He will live on for decades through the fathers, sons, and grandsons, who played under him. Many of whom went on to become coaches. He was not only a great baseball coach but an exceptional man, whom we will all miss, especially me".

The Prince George's baseball team will wear a commemorative patch on its home uniform for the rest of the season in honor of Vaughan and the athletic department also plans to pay tribute to Vaughan at an upcoming baseball game.

Vaughan was inducted into the Maryland Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992. Along with coaching at Prince George's, Vaughan was an assistant coach at Navy, as well as teaching physical education for more than 30 years in Prince George's County.

Vaughan was dedicated to his players and worked hard to help his players transfer to four-year colleges, often on scholarships. He made an impact on every player and person who had the opportunity to be part of his life.

Family will receive friends on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Robert E. Evans Funeral Home at 1600 Annapolis Road, Bowie, Md. A memory service will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. while interment with military honor will be for closed to the public.

A veteran of World War II, he earned degrees from the University of Maryland and George Washington University. Born on August 16, 1926, Vaughan is survived by his sons Rock, Dale and Michael Vaughan along with four granddaughters.
