Mahoney shines in season opener

Wentworth, NC. - Owls Baseball is off to a fast start posting a 4-2 record to start the season. In their first double header game against Rockingham C.C, the Owls men earned the shutout and downed their opponent with a 5-0 score-line. This victory was short lived as Rockingham bounced back in the second game of the double header to defeat the Owls 4-1. Freshman Jon Mahoney was impressive in the Owls first win and shutout, earning the win pitching 6 of the 7 innings played.

With two quick games under their belt, the Owls men continued their winning ways over the next two days after playing Coastal Carolina Club in back to back days. All the contest were double headers and the Owls seemed to have gained even more confidence as the games progressed. The Owls edged Coastal 7-6 and 7-5 on February 13, and although they had the 2-5 lost in the first game on February 14, the team quickly found redemption with an impressive 12-2 win in the second game.

Currently the Owls have a balanced roster returning 8 sophomores to gel with their incoming freshmen. The coaching staff believes that a fast start in the early stretch of games will best prepare the players for the regional playoffs. With this, the team is scheduled to play their first 12 games on the road before opening at home on March 15, 2016.  Currently, the team has a little over a week to prepare before they travel to battle Thomas Nelson Community College on February 27. The double header is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
